Free Support Summer 2022

Summer Academic Working Groups

Summer Academic Working Groups (SAWG) are clusters of 4-6 scholars working on related topics. The nature of the relationship may be substantive (19th Century Social Movements, across disciplines), or disciplinary (race and political participation in the US). Groups then engage in rounds of document sharing and feedback, on a biweekly basis, with the specific exchange date and feedback pattern or mechanism to be determined by the group. Graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and independent scholars are welcome to participate.

The SAWG are free to register and participate in, but free-will donations ($5 suggested) help support the program and keep it free for all. More information will be on the registration form.

Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks (Groups)

Wendy Belcher's classic Writing Your Journal Article In Twelve Weeks (2nd ed.) will serve as the basis for these participant-led writing circles. Members of each small group will progress through Belcher's book together to achieve revision of an article and preparation to submit it by the end of the summer. This is appropriate for faculty, postdocs or PhD students finalizing a job market paper. It can be done alone or in conjunction with a Summer Academic Working Group that provides more substantive feedback. (Graduate students at earlier stages are recommended to participate only in the SAWG.) At Belcher's recommendation, the program works best with a document that is already mostly complete and needs revision, not a document that you are currently drafting. The 12-week program includes two bilateral exchanges, at roughly weeks 5 and 12. Groups are responsible for negotiating their own meeting time and schedule, and procuring their own copies of the book.

The 12 Week groups are free to register and participate in, but free-will donations ($5 suggested) help support the program and keep it free for all. More information will be on the registration form.

Learn Stats with R! Peer Support Group

This group will work through a free online statistics course. The 8 week course introduces R, a free, open-source platform for statistical analysis. This group is designed to be peer-led, with the group determining its weekly scheduled meetings and a Slack channel for discussion and support. Individuals with previous experience in statistics who want to learn R, as well as those who want to learn both stats and R, are welcome. The course's estimated workload is 1-2 hours per week. This program runs May 18 to July 13. NOTE: Do not register for the course until told to do so, or you will not be in sync with the rest of the group.

Two version of this group normally run: regular (8 units/1 module in 8 weeks) and accelerated (16 units/2 modules in 8 weeks). Please indicate in the registration form which version you prefer.
